Landlords are not allowed to discriminate based on a disability, and can’t refuse to rent to you because of your accessibility requirements. In fact, landlords have a duty to accommodate a tenant’s disability up to a certain point. This means they must make reasonable efforts to ensure that you have access to the building and are able to use your unit.
Sometimes, however, it may not be realistic for a landlord to accommodate your needs. For example, a landlord with a modest income renting out their basement suite may not have the money available to make major renovations to their property.
